Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season Blanking George Washington, 7-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team kicked off the spring season with a 7-0 blanking of George Washington at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News on Friday afternoon.

The Monarchs got off to a strong start by sweeping all three matches at doubles for a point. Old Dominion's No. 2 doubles team of Eigy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) and Alex Seleznev (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) started off the dual meet season with an 8-1 victory over the Colonial's Mustafa Gencsoy and Ryan Hunter, while the No. 6 doubles team in the nation, Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), clinched ODU's first point of the year with an 8-3 victory over Sam Salyer and Brandon Harris. Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) took an 8-3 win over Mark Doumba and Elliot Daniels to make it an ODU sweep at doubles. Diskin was playing in his first collegiate dual meet.

In singles, the Monarchs took home all six singles matches in straight sets. No. 7 Harel Srugo only allowed George Washington's Mustafa Genscsoy captured two games at No. 1 singles downing his opponent, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, No. 18 Henrique Cancado and Sam Slayer played a close first set, 7-6 (2), but managed to earn the victory with a 6-3 second set victory. Eidy Igarashi gave the Monarchs a win at No. 3 singles as he defeated Brandon Harris, 6-2, 7-5. No. 4 singles saw Alex Seleznev edge out Mark Doubles by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Rodrigo Souza recorded a 6-2 first set win over Elliot Daniels at No. 5 singles and then blanked his Colonial opponet, 6-0, in the second set. At No. 6 singles, Yakov Diskin played his way to a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The Monarch tennis team returns to action at No. 7 Duke on Wednesday, January 24th. The Blue Devils will be one of six teams the Monarchs will face that are ranked in the current ITA Poll.
