Monarch Grapplers Top Spartans 22-16

NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion Wrestling Monarchs defeated UNC-Greensboro Sunday Afternoon at the ODU Fieldhouse by a score of 22-16. ODU advances their record to 8-6-1 with the win, UNC-G suffers their second loss of the season and is now 9-2.
Bryan LaShomb's 20-9 major decision over Justin Walp set the momentum of the match as the Monarchs jumped to an early 4-0 lead to begin the match. Freshman Ryan Willams followed that performance with a fall over UNC-G's Jake Keene at 1:36 improving his record to 19-12. BJ Compton and Jeff Becker fell to their opponents, Compton by a 10-4 decision, and Becker by a 14-4 major decision allowing the Spartans to narrow the team score to 10-7 going in to the 157 pound match.
At 157, Nick Pullano stuck Nathan Berryman by a 9-2 decision, before Robby Gosnell came out at 165 pounds to beat UNC-G's Mark Ring by a 10-6 decision. TJ Hansen, despite suffered a high ankle sprain early in the first period, was able hold Joseph Lowe to a 10-6 decision. David Mendoza pulled off a 9-3 decision over Kane Smith at 184 pounds.
In the final match at 285 pounds, senior John Dolida lost to no. 13 Tyler Shovlin by fall at 4:06.
The Monarchs take to the road next weekend as they travel to Farifax, Virginia to take on fellow CAA members George Mason and Campbell. ODU's last home match is February 16, as they host VMI in their annual alumni match and senior night.
