Lady Monarch Lacrosse Falls Short In CAA Opener

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team opened the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon at Foreman Field, falling to the George Mason Patriots, 4-8.
The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 3-4 overall, while Mason improved to 2-6. The game marked the conference opener for the Patriots as well.
The Patriots' Sarah Bryant led all scorers with three tallies, while Melissa Venturi added in two. Kristy Manas also recorded two assists in the victory for George Mason. For Old Dominion, all four goals came at the hands of four different Lady Monarchs including junior Tameka Davis' (Washington, D.C.) first net of the 2005 campaign.
Both teams traded goals in the opening minutes, with George Mason striking first with 21:20 on the clock on a Sarah Bryant free position goal and the Lady Monarchs' tying the game up with 18:58 off an unassisted tally from sophomore Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.). Alex Velesz, off the assist from Kristy, Manas gave the Patriots back the lead for good with 16:32 left in the half. Moments later, George Mason struck again, this time with Velesz on the assist and Bryant capturing her second goal of the afternoon.
For the rest of the half, each team traded goals. Sophomore Colleen Carver (Catonsville, Md,) cut ODU's deficit back to one with 8:43 left in the half. However, at the 5:04 mark, the Patriots regained their two-goal edge off a free position shot from Brandi Evans. Lady Monarch leading scorer Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) posted the final goal in the closing seconds of the first stanza off a free position to close the ODU gap to 4-3 at the half.
Old Dominion at eight opportunities to find the back of the Patriots net in the second half, but only managed to do so once. Mason rattled off three unanswered goals to open the second half not allowing the Lady Monarchs to score until 12:11 remained in the game. During the Patriots run, Jess Shelton opened up scoring at 27:59, followed by Melissa Venturi with a tally just over a minute later. Bryant scored her team-leading third and the third unanswered George Mason goal with 19:02 left in the game with the Patriots holding a 7-3 edge.
The Lady Monarchs' Davis recorded ODU's lone goal of the half off a feed from Stanwick. Mason's Venturi rounded out the scoring for the day less than a minute later to bring the game to its final 8-4 margin.
Sophomore Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) scooped up a game-high seven groundballs and was also one of three Lady Monarchs to cause two turnovers. Additionally, Veneziale, who is currently ranked 12th nationally in draw controls, led the team with two.
Melissa Curry and Venturi each collected four groundballs to lead the Patriots in the category. Manas, Evans, and Michele Brady each registered three caused turnovers, while Bryant, the game's leading scorer, led with a game-high three draws.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday when the travel to James Madison. Game-time against the defending CAA champions is at 1:00 p.m.
