Wrestlers Christian Staylor and Adam Wright Head to NCAA Tournament

NORFOLK, VA  -The Old Dominion wrestling team will send two wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament, held Thursday through Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri.  Redshirt Sophomore Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) will make his second appearance in the tournament, while Junior Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/Turner Ashby/184) makes his first appearance after being named a third alternate in 2004.  Staylor will face #9 seed Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State Thursday, while Wright faces #5 seed Brian Glynn of Illinois.

Including Christian Staylor and Adam Wright, the Monarchs have sent 37 different wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament.  This year marks the first time since 2000 that ODU has sent two wrestlers, when Jeff Rusak (165) and Dennis Whitby (149) competed.  Last year, Derrell Lorthridge (Heavyweight) was the lone Monarch sent to the NCAA Tournament, compiling a 1-2 record.

Three other wrestlers that Head Coach Steve Martin coached at Great Bridge High School are also in the NCAA Tournament.  Daniel Frishkorn of Oklahoma State is the #7 seed at 141 pounds after placing third in the Big 12 tournament; Jon Sioredas of Tennessee-Chattanooga is the #6 seed at 165 after winning the Southern Conference championship; and David Dashiell of North Carolina, the ACC champion, will compete in the 197 weight class.

Staylor faces #9 seed Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State

Christian Staylor is 33-9 overall and leads the team in tech falls with seven.  Staylor qualified for the NCAA Tournament by winning his 125 weight class in the CAA Tournament.  Christian Staylor, the top ranked 125 in the CAA, placed 1st in the Virginia Intercollegiate State Tournament, 2nd in the Carolina Open, 3rd at Mat Town and 3rd in the Missouri Open.  Staylor has a 59-21 career record.

Christian Staylor competed in the NCAA Tournament in 2004 as a wildcard while at Arizona State.

Wright faces #5 seed Brian Glynn of Illinois

Adam Wright is 32-9 overall and qualified for the NCAA Tournament by placing second in the 184 weight class in the CAA Tournament.  Wright was selected as a third alternate from the CAA for last year's NCAA Tournament.  Adam Wright placed 1st at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Tournament, 2nd in the Carolina Open, 5th at Mat Town and 2nd at the Missouri Open.  Wright, who has won at least 30 matches for the second straight season, has a career record of 86-24.
