ODU Soccer Continues Home Schedule This Weekend
Sept. 5, 2002
NORFOLK, VA- Both Old Dominion soccer programs will be in town again this weekend for matchups at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
The Lady Monarchs will be in action Friday night against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County as both teams look for their first win of the young season. ODU will try and bounce back from a 1-0 loss in a defensive battle with UNC-Greensboro last Saturday. Stephanie Miller (Plymouth Meeting, PA) made eight saves in goal but it wasn't enough as the Lady Monarchs couldn't convert a goal of their own. UMBC suffered a 5-1 loss against Towson in their opener. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.
On Saturday night the men's soccer team will look to ride the momentum of their opening win last Friday. The Monarchs were able to come from behind twice and defeat Va. Tech 3-2. Kyle Hartley (Va. Beach, VA) and Ben Cummins (Queensland, Australia) were able to score game-tying goals before Bamidele Oluwalana (Oslo, Norway) won it in overtime. The freshman was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for his golden goal just 18 seconds into the extra frame. Sophomore Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) supplied two assists in the game, including on Oluwalana's goal.
The Monarchs will host #22 Wake Forest who is 1-0-1 after playing #11 St. Louis to a tie and defeating Akron 2-1 in the UNC Classic last weekend. The Deacons and Monarchs have met seven times on the soccer field with Wake Forest taking victories in six of those contests. The most recent meeting was last year at Wake Forest, a 3-0 loss for Old Dominion. The Monarchs haven't defeated the Deacons since 1987. Starting with this Saturday's match with Wake Forest, ODU will play five of the nation's top 25 teams: #3 UVA, #15 St. Johns, #20 Rutgers, #21 American and #22 Wake Forest.
Kickoff for the both games will be 7 p.m.
