VCU Edges Women's Soccer in Double-Overtime, 3-2
Nov. 8, 2001
Virginia Beach, VA-Fifth seed Virginia Commonwealth edged number four Old Dominion in double overtime this evening, 3-2, to advance to the CAA women's soccer semifinals tomorrow night. VCU moves on with a 7-9-3 record while the Lady Monarchs' season ends at 5-10-2.
The Rams got off to a quick 1-0 lead when freshman midfielder Katie MacDougal put in a rebounded shot from a corner. Old Dominion answered with 16 seconds left in the half, when senior defender Maureen McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) launched a high-floating shot from 30 yards out that rolled off the hands of the VCU goalie and into the net.
VCU took the lead again in the 55th minute, when Jenna Sanborn knocked in her first goal of the season for a 2-1 Ram lead. Old Dominion tied the game four minutes later, when senior Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) took a crossing pass from sophomore Diane Baucom (Va. Beach, VA)and netted the equalizer.
Struggling through the rest of regulation and the first overtime session, VCU sophomore Shayla Clark finally ended the game in the 112th minute, putting in her own rebounded shot.
It was a frustrating end for the Lady Monarchs, who outshot VCU 29-14 and held a solid 10-5 edge in corners. It also marks the second year in a row that VCU has defeated Old Dominion in the CAA quarterfinals. Last year the Rams edged ODU in penalty kicks, and the two teams have played to double-overtime in their last three meetings.
