January 7, 2003 - GREENSBORO, NC - The Old Dominion wrestling team captured six of ten bouts to rally past the Spartans, 23-17, in non-conference wrestling action from Fleming Gym Tuesday night.

Trailing 13-4 after the first three weight classes, ODU (1-0) ripped off 19 consecutive points over the next five matches to take the win.

Ben Summerlin started the comeback with a 14-6 victory over C.J. Jones at 174-pounds. Jones stayed with Summerlin early in the match, tying the score at six midway through the second period, but then Summerlin took command with a two-point takedown and three near-fall points as time winded down in the second period.

At 184-pounds, Adam Wright brought the Monarchs within two points, 13-11, after his 10-4 victory over Steve McLamrock. Greg Gill provided the serious blow at 197-pounds. Gill jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead over Alex Pierce, before winning by pin.

Derrell Lorthridge followed up the pin with a hard-fought, 3-1, victory over John Kimble at 285-pounds. Lorthridge and Kimball seemed destined for overtime, but the ODU heavyweight scored a takedown with just 20-seconds remaining in regulation to score the victory.

John Starkes sealed the victory for the Monarchs at 125-pounds in his first match of the year. Starkes rallied past Tony Stewart to gain a 10-6 victory. Stewart jumped out to a 6-2 lead and seemed in control, but Starkes would score eight straight points to give Old Dominion a 23-13 lead.

The Spartans (0-2) opened the dual with Wes Gibson's 11-3 major decision victory over John Stovich. Gibson trailed 3-2 midway through the first period, but scored a take down late in the opening period then took control in periods two and three.

UNCG upped its lead to 10-0 when Ryan Tripp won at 149-pounds by forfeit.

Dennis Whitby got Old Dominion in the scorebook with his dominating 11-1 victory over Keith Ritter at 157-pounds. Nate Parmenter momentarily halted the Monarchs' momentum by slipping past Matt Ulrey at 165-pounds, 3-1. With the match tied, 1-1, Parmenter scored a takedown with just 0.6 seconds left in regulation.

David Johnson ended the night with a dominating victory, 14-5, at 133-pounds over Charlie Busch.
