Wrestling Comes up Just Short at Central Michigan, 18-16

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - No. 13 Central Michigan won two of the three final matches to pull out an 18-16 win over Old Dominion University Sunday afternoon at CMU.

Old Dominion (5-9-1) won four matches and lost three matches by two points or less.

Brennan Brumley gave the Monarchs their first lead of the match with a second period pin over Scott Mattingly. Mattingly got a reversal to start the second period but Brumley got a reversal of his own and worked it into a pin with three seconds to go in the period to give ODU a 13-12 lead.

Joey Metzler got the first takedown at 149, but Donnie Corby was able to escape to make it 2-1 after one. Metzler gained an escape to make the score 3-1, but Corby escaped and earned a takedown and the riding time point to secure a 5-2 decision and give CMU a 15-13 lead.

Ryan Cubberly increased Central Michigan's (5-7) lead to 18-13 with a 6-3 decision at 157.

Dan Rivera gave the Monarchs a victory in the final match of the day, with a 3-1 sudden victory win over Eric Cubberly.

No. 5 Ben Bennett started the match with an 8-3 victory over Tristan Warner at 174, but Joe Budi got the Monarchs on the board in the next match. After a scoreless first period, Chad Friend got an escape to start the second but Budi countered with a takedown. A third period escape and takedown gave Budi a 5-1 decision to tie the team score at three.

The Chippewas took a 9-3 lead with close wins at 197 and 285, but James Nicholson pulled ODU to within 9-7 with a 15-5 major decision at 125 pounds.

Nicholson, ranked fourth in the nation, recorded six takedowns and a three-point nearfall for the dominant victory.

In a matchup of two top-15 wrestlers at 133, No. 9 Scotti Sentes grabbed a 4-0 decision over No. 11 Kyle Hutter. After a scoreless first period, Sentes earned a second period escape and a takedown, and was able to earn the riding time point for the victory.

The Monarchs will travel to NC State on Saturday, Feb. 5 for their final away match of the season at 7 p.m.
