Tanner Scores Twice As Monarchs Shutout George Mason, 4-0 In Men's Soccer

FAIRFAX, VA. (October 1) -- Senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY.) scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, Md.) posted the shutout as the Old Dominion University Soccer Monarchs defeated George Mason, 4-0 in a CAA match Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs are now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAA.

The Patriots dropped their fourth straight and fall to 4-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.

Two minutes into the match freshman Anders Haugom (Middleton, NY.) put the Monarchs up on an assist from Carlos Mendes (Mineola, NY.). With eight minutes left in the half, Tanner scored on an assist from freshman Michael Tooley (Richmond, Va.). Tanner scored again, to open the second half on an assist from junior, Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England). ODU's final goal came with a little more than nine minutes remaining by freshman Brandon Baker (Parker, CO.) on an assist from Michael McCatty (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada).

Tanner, the CAA Player of the Week, leads the league in scoring with nine goals and 19 points this season. Tanners 23 career goals place him in a tie for sixth all-time in Old Dominion soccer history with Michael Edmonds ('79) and George Cruz ('76). Goalkeeper Connelly now has three shutouts this season. The last time the Monarchs started the season off at 6-2 was in 1992.

Today's win was the Monarchs first over the Patriots since 1991. Old Dominion hosts East Carolina Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
