Tanner, Tooley Lead Monarchs Over Penn, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA -- Senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY) landed the game-winner and freshman midfielder Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) also scored to lead Old Dominion to a 2-1 victory over Ivy League-foe Pennsylvania. The Monarchs improve to 10-2-0 overall as Penn falls to 3-5-2.

Penn took the lead in the ninth minute on an ODU own-goal when the ball deflected off a Monarch defender and bounced past keeper Chuck Connelly (Rockville, MD). The Quakers held the 1-0 lead at the half, though Old Dominion had blasted seven shots to Penn's three.

In the second half, Tooley tied the game with a blast off the right post off an assist by junior forward Tommy Barnicle (Liverpool, England). The strike was the freshman's eighth of the season.

Tanner later recorded the game winner as he carried for 20 yards before blasting the shot past Penn keeper Michael O?Connor. The goal was Tanner?s 14th of the season.

For the game Connelly recorded four goal saves, while the Monarchs outshot the Quakers, 12-7, and registered more corners, 8-4.

The Monarchs, winners of six straight, return to action when they face CAA foe Richmond in Richmond, VA, on Wednesday, October 20th, at 7:30 pm.
