Final Stats

Towson, Md.- #18 Towson University (11-3, 5-2 Colonial Athletic Association) held Old Dominion (3-10, 0-6 CAA) to one goal in the second half to pull out a 10-5 win over the Lady Monarchs this afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

Towson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after junior Becky Trumbo scored just 1:33 into the game off a pass from sophomore Shannon Witzel. Senior Amy Middleton and Witzel posted Towson's second and third goals on a pair of free position attempts at 22:43 and 21:52, respectively.

But Old Dominion battled back, netting three straight goals of its own to knot the score at three apiece. Ashley Stanwick scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon with 16:49 remaining in the half. Katie Veneziale was credited with the assist. Caroline Jacobs scored unassisted for the Lady Monarchs at 11:31, and Stanwick and Veneziale teamed up again to record ODU's third goal a little over a minute later.

The score remained tied for exactly three minutes until Trumbo put the Tigers up for good with 7:37 remaining in the first with an unassisted goal. Middleton netted her second of the game at 4:50 to push Towson's lead to 5-3 before ODU's Stanwick struck again to complete her hat trick with 1:01 left in the first. Tiger Kendie Bauer recorded her second goal of the season with 14 seconds to go before the break to give Towson a 6-4 lead.

The Tigers clamped down on defense in the second half, and ODU scored only one goal in 30 minutes while committing 11 turnovers. Senior Erin Cayea started the second half scoring at 13:44 when she converted on a free position attempt to put Towson up 7-4. ODU's Veneziale scored at 10:25 on a free position shot. Cayea scored again at 6:48 to make it 8-5, and Witzel recorded two goals in the final five minutes to round off Towson's scoring.

With the win, Towson secures its second consecutive berth in the CAA Tournament. The tourney will be held at CAA-leading Hofstra University, which clinched first place in the league today with a 12-10 win over George Mason.

The young rivalry between the Lady Monarchs and the Tigers is now tied, 2-2. Towson has won its fifth straight game, the second time this season the Tigers have strung together five wins. Towson also remains a perfect 5-0 at home.

The Tigers were led by Witzel's three goals. Middleton, Trumbo and Cayea each added two goals and Bauer contributed one. Freshman goalie Mandy Corry's sparkling play in the net continued. Her ten saves mark the fourth consecutive time Corry has saved ten or more shots in a game.

Stanwick's three goals were tops for ODU. Jacobs added one goal and one assist, and Veneziale had one goal and two assists.
