BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 25 Old Dominion University Wrestling team was able to overcome an early deficit on Sunday evening at Cassell Coliseum to pull within four points with two matches to go, but No. 23 Virginia Tech was able to hold on for the victory on Senior Night, 22-12.

Starting at 133 pounds, the top ranked wrestler in the country proved to be too much for redshirt sophomore Eric Dunnet as Devin Carter won via tech fall, 27-12. Wrestling in just his second collegiate dual, true freshman Taylor Moeder was pinned at the 3:46 mark to put the Hokies (7-4) up 10-0 quickly.

A thrilling match at 149 pounds saw the Hokies’ Nick Brascetta slip past redshirt junior Brennan Brumley, 7-4 in the first overtime tiebreaker. The Monarchs (11-8) then began their comeback, winning four of the next matches as redshirt sophomore No. 27 John Nicholson won his 11th consecutive match with a 9-4 win over Cameron Hurd.

Sophomore No. 27 Tristan Warner was unable to get past Tech’s No. 7 Pete Yates at 165 pounds as he fell 9-2. Senior No. 13 Te Edwards got ODU back on track with a 4-2 narrow win over Chris Moon at 174 pounds.

Redshirt sophomore Billy Curling used a late takedown to win a thrilling 3-2 match at 184 pounds over John Dickson, 3-2. Senior Joe Budi then downed Nick Vetterlein, 6-2, at 197 pounds to close the team gap to 16-12.

The Hokies would then seal the dual win with victories in the final two matches beginning at heavyweight when Chris Penny proved to be too much for redshirt junior Grant Chapman, 8-2. Rolling over the lineup at 125 pounds, the Hokies’ Erik Spjut won a tight 3-1 battle over redshirt freshman Jerome Robinson in the final match of the evening.

Sunday began a stretch where four of Old Dominion’s final five duals of the regular season are against ranked opponents. The Monarchs return home to the Ted Constant Convocation Center on Sunday, Feb. 5 when they host No. 21 Central Michigan at 3 p.m.
