Swimming And Diving Dominates Quad Meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated Saturday's quad meet at West Point as both teams defeated American, Army, and George Mason. On the men's side, the Monarchs picked up an 155-120 victory over Army, a 229-33 victory over American, and a 180-95 win over CAA rival George Mason. On the women's side, the Lady Monarchs downed host Army 231-74, defeated American 223-81, and picked up a 209-53 CAA win over George Mason.

The women, who won seven events on the afternoon, improved to 9-6 overall. Highlighting their efforts was the women's 200 medley relay squad of April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and Liza Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia), which managed to post the second fastest time in school history clocking in at 1:47.16.

Barrientos, who swam the opening leg of the 200 medley relay, picked up two other victories on the day. She captured both the 100 (57.31) and 200 back (2:06.13). Moiseeva, who swam the final leg of the 200 medley relay, also earned a victory in the 200 free (1:53.89).

Also earning multiple wins was Caroline Larsson (Trelleborg, Sweden), who paced ODU in the distance events. She won both the 1650 free (17:43.08) and 500 free (5:08.11).

Rounding out the Lady Monarch wins in the water was Nowak, who hit the wall first in the 100 fly (57.43).

The men, meanwhile, upped their overall mark to 9-1 on the year taking home eight event victories.

The 200 medley relay squad of Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland), Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden), and Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) kicked off the day with a win (1:34.86). The squad posted the top time of the year for the Monarchs in the event.Later in the day, Lundberg and Ramkvist would team up with Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) to win the 400 free relay (3:10.44).

Arnason added to his win total by winning three individual events capturing the 100 (55.25) and 200 breast (2:02.46) as well as the 50 free (20.76).

Loccisano also picked up an additional two wins in freestyle. He won both the 100 (47.19) and 200 free (1:42.85).

Rounding out the Monarch top times was Ramkvist with a victory in the 100 back (51.99).

The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, January 31st against CAA rival Towson. The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs will once again utilize the facilities at Norfolk State. Meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
