Norfolk, Va. - Racing on its home course paid off for the Old Dominion University's women's rowing team as the Lady Monarchs captured two first place finishes and a second place finish at the Head of the Lafayette on Sunday.

The Lady Monarchs began the day by taking the top two spots in the Collegiate 4 thanks to a surprising effort from a group of freshmen. ODU's Varsity 4 dominated the field on the course which was shortened to 3,000 meters due to water conditions, while one second off the pace was the Freshman 4 comprised Jenna Marconko (Coxswain), Liz Hess (Stroke), Callie Roadcap (2), Marie Gately (3) and Nicole Meyer (Bow).

In the Women's 8, ODU took little time erasing the staggered start as the Lady Monarchs used some powerful strokes to close the gap on the other crews, including a tough club team from William & Mary.

The day's efforts were even more surprising when you consider it was the first race of the season for all but three of the Lady Monarchs.

"Today was everything we could have hoped for," said head coach Heather Weisel. "To have the freshmen have such strong races in both the F8 and the Collegiate 4 was a great indication of our potential as a team. The F8 closed a 40 second starting gap to win over a deep William & Mary freshmen squad. Our Varsity 4 came on strong and held off the rest of the field to win their race as well. And the Freshman 4, who had only been together for about three days, made a statement today about their goals for the future by coming in a second behind our own Varsity 4. This gives us terrific momentum heading into a much larger regatta next Saturday at the Head of the Occoquan. We still have a long way to go, but this is an exciting start."
