CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Monarch men's tennis doubles team of junior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) and senior Zoltan Csanadi (Timosoara, Romania) reached the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships on Sunday afternoon, falling to the tournament's top seed.
Van der Merwe and Csanadi defeated San Diego State's Felix Hardt and Ryan Redondo in the quarterfinals, 8-2, advancing to the tournament's semifinals to face the top seeds. The Old Dominion duo then fell, 8-4, in the semis to top seeded Richard Barker and William Barker of Rice. The ITA Men's All-American Championships is not only the largest single tournament of this season in collegiate tennis, with over 300 competitors, but also the first of three national championship events at the Division I level during the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season.
The ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
The Monarch men's tennis team will return to action next weekend as they serve as hosts at the annual East Coast Collegiate Tennis Championships at the ODU tennis courts on campus.
