GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The 21st ranked ODU Monarchs have four wrestlers competing attached at the Southern Scuffle tournament this week and all four advanced to the Quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Rookies Joe Budi (Appleton, Wisc./Kaukauna) and David Wilson (Norfolk, Va./Granby) will face the number one seed in their first match on Tuesday, while juniors Eric Decker and Kaylen Baxter will face the number two seeds in their weights.
Budi, at 184 lbs, cruised into the quarterfinals with an 8-2 decision over UNC Greensboro's Ryan Sughrue and a 15-0 technical fall over The Citadel's Kelby Smith. The ODU newcomer will face Kent State's Dustin Kilgore, the 6th ranked 184-pounder in the nation, in the quarters tomorrow.
Wilson wrestled in his first action as an attached wrestler for ODU, and posted two wins at the 285 lb weight class. He earned a major decision over Austin Haigler (NCSU) and a 4-2 win over Boston University's Jim Connors. He's slated to face the #7 heavyweight, Mitch Monteiro, from Cal State Bakersfield on day two.
Decker will also have a huge matchup to start day two, as he faces Hofstra's Alton Lucas, ranked #7 in the nation. It will be Decker's first look at the CAA's top 174-pounder. Decker reached the quarters with decisions against Mike Billings (Navy) and Anthony Trongone (Virginia Tech).
Baxter, wrestling at 149 lbs at the Scuffle, will have the toughest test on the second day, as he will face #5 Bryce Saddoris (Navy) in the quarterfinals. He dropped Princeton's Daniel Kolodzik and Donnie Vinson from Binghamton to reach the matchup with Saddoris. Saddoris posted a pin and two major decisions on the first day.
The Monarchs posted 13.5 points on the first day with all four attached wrestlers still alive in the championship bracket.
