BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 18/19 Monarchs wrestling team closed out a 2007-08 regular season with a 26-9 win over in-state rivals Virginia Tech. The win improved ODU to 17-3 overall, the second highest number of wins in program history. Kaylen Baxter (Fairbanks, Alaska) won his 38th bout of the season by major decision and remains second in the nation in total victories.

David Mendoza (Wyomissing, Pa.) kicked off the dual with an 8-3 decision of D.J. Bruce at 197 lbs to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead. Tech's David Marone, though, would answer with an 8-3 decision of Andy Totusek (Omaha, Neb.) in the heavyweight matchup.

ODU would answer with four straight wins including major decisions from #10 James Nicholson (Des Moines, Iowa) and Baxter, tallying a team-high 21 match points. Nicholson won 11-2 over Justin Staylor and #17 Kyle Hutter (Mokena, Ill.) followed with a 4-3 decision of Jared Jones. Ryan Williams (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) grabbed his team-high 13th decision, 9-5, over Chris Diaz. Baxter closed out the run with his major decision over Nick Murray, 21-9.

Virginia Tech added three more points, cutting the lead to 17-6 after the 157 lb bout, when Matt Rosen earned a 7-4 decision over Dan Rivera (Winter Springs, Fla.). #18 Chris Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) would seal the victory for ODU, though, as Virginia Tech forfeited the 165-lb weight.

Senior Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, Va.) won his final regular season match over Eddie Baughn in the 174-lb weight, 10-6.

Virginia Tech would win the 184-lb weight class to cut the lead to the final score of 26-9. Jesse Strawn (Holton, Kan.) had a 4-2 lead in the third period, but Hokie 184-pounder Tommy Spellman earned a late escape and takedown for the final score of 5-4.

With the win, ODU has totaled the second most victories in program history, with 17. The 17-3 record is the second best winning percentage in the last 40 years. The team will now prepare for the CAA Tournament, held at Hofstra University on March 7-8.
