#75 Monarchs Tennis Edges #68 Alabama-Birmingham

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- The #75 Old Dominion men's tennis team defeated its first ranked opponent of the 2003 dual meet season after four tries with a 4-3 victory over #68 Alabama-Birmingham. The win improves the Monarchs to 8-3 on the year having won their last three straight.

The Monarchs had previously lost to #17 Wake Forest (3-4), #14 Virginia Commonwealth (3-4), and #75 Princeton (1-6), before defeating the ranked Blazers.

Junior Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) pushed his No. 1 singles match to three sets, but emerged with the victory, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 over Bastian Gruendler. Sophomore Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) earned a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over UAB's Ivan Andreeve. Senior Patrik Binkowsi (Orby, Sweden) gave Old Dominion its third win at No. 4 singles with a three set 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 decision over Kristijan Mitovski. Junior Niklas Oskarsson defeated Dino Mancarella to seal the victory with his, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.

The men's tennis team will return to action against East Tennessee State and Virginia later this week.
