NORFOLK (August 15, 2000) -- Old Dominion wrestling coach Gray Simons has announced the hiring of Joe Baranik as assistant coach.

Baranik will be joining the Monarchs after several years of coaching at both the collegiate and high school level. Prior to Old Dominion, he served as an assistant coach at the Unites States Military Academy (West Point), Virginia, and Slippery Rock University. Baranik has also been the Assistant Scholastic Director of the National Wrestling Coaching Association for the last three years.

The Altoona, PA native is no stranger to Hampton Roads. Baranik served as head coach at nearby Maury High School in 1989 and 1990, guiding the Commodores to district titles each year. Most recently he served as head coach at Hollidaysburg H.S. in Pennsylvania, where he guided his team to a fifth-place state finish in 1998. Baranik graduated from Lock Haven University in 1982 and received his Masters degree from Slippery Rock in 1983.
