NORFOLK, VA - Old Dominion's men's soccer team will play the #2 seed in the NCAA Men's College Cup, Maryland, in a second-round match-up Wednesday night, at 6:00 PM in College Park, MD. ODU is coming off a 6-3 first-round home win over N.C. State Saturday night, which allowed the Monarchs to advance to the second round of the tournament for the second year in a row.
Maryland comes into the game with a 17-2-1 record, which includes a win over the #1 seed and defending champion, UCLA. The Terrapins are coming off a Penalty Kicks-decided loss to Virginia November 16, in the finals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. The game was tied 1-1 after two overtime periods, but the Cavaliers prevailed 7-6 in Penalty Kicks to take the title and the automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
ODU has a 4-7-1 all-time record against Maryland, dropping the last three in the series. The last game was in Norfolk in 1996 when the Monarchs dropped a 2-0 decision. The Terrapins are the third ACC team ODU will face this season, after taking on #5 Wake Forest and N.C. State at home already this year. The Monarchs won both games, taking a 2-0 win over the Demon Deacons September 21 and a 6-3 win over the Wolfpack this past Saturday.
The Monarchs also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men's College Cup last year, after defeating Richmond 3-0 at home in the first round. Playing against the #1 seed, Wake Forest, in the second round, the game was scoreless before Wake Forest scored in the 77th minute of play to take a 1-0 victory. 2002 marked the first time the Monarchs had advanced past the first round of the tournament.
