ODU Men's Tennis Upsets W&M, 4-3, in CAA Semifinal

WILLIAMSBURG, VA - Old Dominion's men's tennis team, ranked 55th in the nation and seeded third, upset No. 38 William and Mary, the No. 2 seed, 4-3, today in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Tennis Championship at the Tribe's Busch Tennis Courts. The win improves the Monarchs' record to 14-8, while the Tribe's record drops to 12-12.
W&M opened up with a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles point with victories at the top two matches. The Tribe duo of junior Sean Kelleher and sophomore Stephen Ward defeated Zoltan Csanadi and Calin Milos, 8-3 at No. 2, but ODU responded with a win at No. 3, as Henrique Cancado and Adriano Mello defeated juniors Alex Fish and Jeff Kader , 8-4. W&M's team of senior Geoff Russell and freshman Steven Kane, ranked 46th in the nation, clinched the point with a thrilling 9-8 (7) win at No. 1 over Nate Grover and Izak van der Merwe.
The Tribe took a 2-0 lead in the match, as Ward defeated Mello, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. However, the Monarchs bounced back to tie the score at two, as CAA Player of the Year van der Merwe, ranked 18th in the country, defeated Kader, ranked No. 50, 6-4, 6-4, and Cancado beat Kane at No. 5, 6- 2, 6-4. W&M took a 3-2 lead when Kelleher defeated Csanadi on court two, 6-4, 6-3. ODU re-tied the score at three, as Milos defeated Russell at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. The Monarchs won the match with a come-from-behind victory at No. 6, where Niklas Oskarsson defeated Fish, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
ODU advances to the final match of the CAA Championship, where the Monarchs will face either Virginia Commonwealth or UNC Wilmington. ODU last made the conference finals in 2001, and also advanced to the championship in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998.
