ODU Suffers First Loss of Season To No. 6 North Carolina, 16-9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Despite a second half rally that had ODU scoring more second half goals than UNC, the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season today, with a 16-9 setback to #6 North Carolina (6-2). ODU was led by senior Kelly Kimener, with six points, while junior Ashley Kellogg added four.
The Tar Heels led off the game with a pair of quick free position goals to go ahead 2-0. ODU's leading scorers Kelly Kimener and Ashley Kellogg would counter with a pair of goals to even the score at two, but UNC would close the first half on a 9-1 run to lead at the break, 11-3.
Kimener had two goals and an assist while Kellogg had a goal and an assist in the first half. UNC was led by Corey Donohoe, who scored four goals in the first half. Meghan Clarke and Megan Bosica each had a goal and an assist.
In the second half, the Lady Monarchs tried to work back into the game, down eight, by scoring three of the first four int he half. With 17:19 remaining, Kimener scored on a pass from Kellogg and cut the lead to six, 12-6. North Carolina, though, would again counter with a run, scoring three straight in the next eight minutes.
In the last seven minutes, Kimener scored her fourth goal of the game, giving her 11 on the season, Jessica Capra scored her second goal of the season and defender Erica Erb tallied her first. UNC's Sarah Kuonen scored on a free position attempt with 45 seconds remaining for the final, 16-9.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Tar Heels in the game, 29-27, but UNC was more efficient, scoring on nearly 60% of shots while ODU was just over 31%. ODU also grabbed more draw controls, 14-13.
ODU continues its three-game road swing with a game at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia this Saturday, March 21 at 12:00 noon.
