Vendegh Scores Hat Trick in 5-0 Win Over UNCW
Sept. 28, 2002
Junior striker Attila Vendegh scored three goals in the first half, including twice in a four-minute span, as Old Dominion cruised to a 5-0 victory over UNC Wilmington in the Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer opener for both teams Saturday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The hat trick gives Vendegh 36 career goals as a Monarch, which ties the ODU career record.
The Monarchs improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. The Seahawks had a five-game winning streak snapped and now stand 5-1, 0-1 in the league.
Vendegh, out of Bratislava, Slovakia, broke the game open midway through the first period with three quick goals. He put the Monarchs ahead 1-0, at 33:08 with a goal off an assist by Brandon Baker and staked ODU to a 2-0 advantage just 23 seconds later when he slapped a shot past UNCW goalkeeper Bill Mills at 33:31.
Vendegh then completed his hat trick at 36:30, converting a penalty kick for his sixth goal of the season. ODU added a pair of goals in the second half after UNCW was forced to plan a man down with the ejection of Nick Acosta. Sophomore midfielder Kevon Harris took a cross from Vendegh and chipped the ball in at 77:52, and freshman forward Brian Cvilikas added the final score at 83:46, with Michael Goncalves and Ado Fazlic each credited with assists.
ODU junior goalkeeper Sam Cameron recorded his first shutout of the season, collecting seven saves. Old Dominion meets St. John's and Rutgers next weekend in the Rutgers Tournament in Piscataway, NJ.
