Monarch Sailors Finish Fifth At National Championships
KINGS POINT, NY (June 7) - The Old Dominion University sailing Monarchs finished fifth at the ICYRA Co-ed Dinghy Collegiate National Championships on June 7, hosted by the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
The Monarchs, who were sixth entering the day, overtook College of Charleston today to move up to fifth. St. Mary's won the National Championship with 192 points, Hobart William Smith was second with 203, Southern California was third with 220 and Harvard took fourth with 234. Old Dominion finished with 248, edging out Charleston by one point.
The Monarchs "A" boat skippered by Brad Funk (Harbors Bluffs, FL.), with crew Dan Lawrence (West River, MD.) and Elizabeth Biondi (Norwalk, CT.) took fourth place in that division with 130 points. Their best finishes were a second and a fourth.
The Monarchs "B" boat skippered by Adam Burns(Youngstown, NY.), with crew Abigail Curran (Osterville, MA.) , Heather Pescatello (Westerly, RI.) and Brock Callen (Martha's Vineyard, MA.) placed fifth with 118 points. The compiled two second places and a third in six races today.
The Monarchs competed in three of the six collegiate national championships this year. In the fall, Old Dominion placed fourth at the ICYRA Singlehanded Nationals, while last week, the Lady Monarchs placed seventh at the ICYRA Women's Nationals.
