Women's Tennis Capture 6-1 Victory Over George Washington

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion Lady Monarch tennis team kicked off its spring season on Friday night at Center Court Racket Club with a 6-1 victory over George Washington. The Lady Monarchs earned five singles victories and swept the doubles point in their first showing of the dual meet season.

Old Dominion captured the doubles point capturing all three doubles matches. Junior Kerstin Endlich (Neustadt, Germany) and sophomore Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) combined for an 8-3 victory over the Colonials' Anastasia Skavronskaia and Sandra Simunic at No. 1 doubles, while ODU's sophomore Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) and freshman Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) teamed for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles over Kendall Swenson and Natasha Bode. Freshman Linda Garder (Tallin, Estonia) and sophomore Barbara Kerner (Herxheim, Germany) wrapped up the doubles action with an 8-6 No. 3 doubles win over Anne Watkins and Michelle Alexander.

George Washington picked up its lone point at No. 3 singles defeating the Lady Monarchs' Fernanda Luiz in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. However, Old Dominion would take home the rest of the singles matches. Two-time Second Team All-CAA selection Kerstin Endlich opened her third dual meet season with a three-set win at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, over Anastasia Skavronskia. ODU's Larissa Santos played to a straight set, 6-2, 6-2, decision over Sandra Simunic at No. 2 singles, while Barbara Costa made her first dual meet appearance as a Lady Monarch at No. 4 singles. She downed the Colonials' Michelle Alexander, 6-1, 6-4. Fellow classmate Linda Garder closed out play with a 2-6, 7-5 (1) victory at No. 6 singles over Natasha Bode, 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Monarchs (1-0) return to action on Friday, January 28th against CAA rival George Mason as well as Hampton Roads rival, Norfolk State, at Center Court Racket Club in Newport News, Va.
