Van der Merwe ('05) Loses In U.S. Open Qualifying Match

FLUSHING, NY--Two time All-American tennis player Izak van der Merwe ('05) lost his second-round match Thursday to No. 8 seeded Roko Karanusic of Croatia, 6-3,6-3 at the U.S. Open men's singles qualifying tournament at the National tennis Center.

Van der Merwe, who is ranked No. 297 in the world won his first round match on Tuesday defeating Brazil's Eric Gomes, 6-4,6-1.

Last year, Van der Merwe earned his way into the 128-player draw of Wimbledon, by winning three straight qualifying matches.

At ODU, the South African native earned All-American honors in 2004 in both singles and doubles, and again in singles in 2005. He was named CAA Player of the Year in both 2004 and 2005 ad was the CAA Tournament MVP in 2004.

In 2005 he ranked 24th nationally and in 2004 he was 20th. Van der Merwe completed his career with a 100-39 record in singles. Izak reached the NCAA singles semi-finals in 2005 and reached NCAA doubles semi-finals as well as twice reaching the National Indoor doubles finals.
