NORFOLK, Va. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings were announced this week featuring three Monarch men's tennis student-athletes. Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) topped the Region II singles rankings, while fellow teammate, sophomore Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) ranked 14th. Van der Merwe and double partner sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) were ranked sixth in the doubles rankings.

Van der Merwe finished the fall season with a 9-4 record with appearances in the quarterfinals of the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships and semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Tournament. He reached the semifinals of the indoor tournament by knocking off 16th ranked Ludovic Walter of Duke. In the Preseason ITA Poll, van der Merwe was ranked ninth.

Cancado recorded a 5-5 fall tournament record. His results included the semifinals of the Hampton Road Collegiate Invitational and University of Virginia Fall Invitational and the Round of the 32 in the main draw of the ITA Mideast Regional. During his run at the UVA Fall Invite, Cancado recorded a victory over 31st-ranked Derick Spice of Wake Forest.

Van der Merwe and Grover, ranked 26th in the Preseason ITA Poll, earned a 5-4 record this fall. The duo reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Mideast Regional after reaching the main draw from the qualifying bracket. In their first round match-up at the regional, van der Merwe and Grover picked up a victory over the 14th-ranked doubles team from Auburn.
