NORFOLK, Va. -- Ted Alexander, the play-by-play voice of the ODU men's basketball team the past two seasons, will call the action for the ODU football broadcasts this fall and will continue in the same capacity for men's basketball games, as announced today by Old Dominion University and CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, the multi-media rights partner of Old Dominion University.
"I'm ecstatic to be named the Voice of the Monarchs," said Alexander. "I've had a great time working with the men's basketball team the past two years and can't wait to be a part of the re-birth of the Monarch football program."
Alexander was selected from a pool of over 130 applicants. In addition to calling all the action for the Monarchs, Alexander will continue to serve as a member of Hampton Road's WTKR News Channel 3's news team, and as an announcer for the Max Media radio group. He served as WTKR's Sports Director from 1998-2000 and 2001-2005, winning an Emmy in 2003. Formerly a local morning host at WWDE Radio, he was also a writer/producer for Court TV's "Forensic Files". A graduate of Bethany College, Alexander also worked in radio in the Wheeling and Morgantown, West Virginia, Augusta, Georgia and Frederick and Hagerstown, Maryland markets.
"Ted's ability to describe the action and engage the listener into the broadcast placed him at the top of our applicant pool," says ODU senior associate athletic director Debbie White. "He is able to paint a picture of the sights and sounds of the event for the fan as if you were in the stands, and this skill, coupled with his knowledge of our program, will provide a total game experience."
Old Dominion's 2009 football season begins on September 5th when the Monarchs host Chowan University. Other members of the radio team, including a color analyst and sideline reporter, will be announced in the near future.
"We are very pleased with the selection of Ted Alexander as the Voice of the Monarchs. He has great ties to the community and school, as well as a wonderful ability to communicate the game action over the airwaves" said Brock Petrie, Multimedia Rights Manager with CBS Collegiate Sports Properties. "We appreciate the help we received from the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America, and Jon Chelesnik, which allowed us to have national reach with our search."
