NORFOLK, Va. - Head coach Steve Martin and the ODU wrestling team welcomed the addition of three-time NCAA Qualifier Luke Smith to the coaching staff today. The former world team member will join the nationally ranked Monarchs program as a lightweight coach starting immediately this fall.

"We are very excited to have Luke join the staff," said Martin. "He's still competing and is currently training for the 2012 Olympics, which offers our lightweight guys a unique opportunity to practice with one of the nation's best. He fills a void we've had for a while and will be a guy who can work with our lightweights on a daily basis."

Smith was fourth at the 2006 World Team Trials and a three-time NCAA Qualifier at Central Michigan University. He competed at the University World Championships in Mongolia in the summer of 2006 as the runner-up at University Nationals.

At CMU, he was a two-time Mid-American Conference champion at 125 lbs. He was Co-Rookie of the Year as an NCAA Qualifier, ranking as high as 17th nationally. The following year he won his second MAC Championship and lost to eventual national champion Joe Dubuque in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Finally, he earned a wild card bid to the NCAA Tournament after a third place performance at the MAC Tournament, helping lead the Chippewas to the conference title.

Smith is replacing Matt Storniolo who left Old Dominion to pursue other opportunities in collegiate wrestling.
