NORFOLK, VA -- The Lady Monarch field hockey team (16-4, 3-0 CAA), the top seed at the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Field Hockey Championships, defeated fourth seeded Virginia Commonwealth, 7-1, to advance to the championship game. Old Dominion will face second seeded James Madison at 1:00 p.m. The Dukes defeated William and Mary, 2-1, in double overtime to advance to tomorrow's final against the Lady Monarchs.

The game remained scoreless through much of the first half until junior midfielder Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) drove home her shot off a penalty corner for the game-winner at 5:42. CAA Player of the Year Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA) and sophomore Melissa Leonetti (Erdenhiem, PA) both assisted on the play. Rookie of the Year Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland) added another tally just over a minute later at the 4:25 mark, lifting the ball over the Rams' keeper into the far right corner of the net, to give Old Dominion at 2-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Old Dominion scored four unanswered goals before Virginia Commonwealth broke the shutout. Sophomore Lynn Farquhar (Alexandria, VA) added in her first collegiate goal, while seniors Julie Miracle (Audubon, PA) and Crystal Carper (Fredericksburg, VA) and sophomore Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) helped extend the Lady Monarch lead. VCU's Lauren Sparrow scored the lone Ram goal of the afternoon off an assist from Tarvis Parker with just over four minutes remaining in the game to break Old Dominion's potential 10th shutout of the year. Junior Denita Acker (Cape Town, South Africia), who normally serves as a goalkeeper, but dresses as a position player due to injuries, brought the Lady Monarchs' lead back up to six with her first collegiate goal over a minute later.

In net, Old Dominion's Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) faced just two Virginia Commonwealth shots in her 61 minutes of action, recording one save. The Rams' Abby Stiles made 10 saves on the afternoon.
