Csanadi, van der Merwe Highlight ODU Men's Tennis Award Winners

RICHMOND, Va. - Old Dominion men's tennis members junior Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) and sophomore Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) were named First Team All-CAA in both singles and doubles it was announced this evening by the Colonial Athletic Association.

In doubles play, the duo of Csanadi and van der Merwe rank seventh in the country compiling a 21-4 overall mark and 7-2 dual meet record. The two captured the ITA Region II Championship as well at the Virginia Tournament Title. They also reached the finals of the ITA National Indoor Championships. Csanadi and van Der Merwe, who play at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively, has each registered 18-2 records in dual meets.

Virginia Commonwealth University junior Pedro Nieto (Sevilla, Spain) was selected as the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association men's tennis Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.

Others receiving top honors from the conference include Hofstra's Nikola Djordjevic (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) as CAA Rookie of the Year, and Virginia Commonwealth's Paul Kostin as CAA Coach of the Year.

Nieto is ranked 60th nationally in singles in the latest Omni Hotel Collegiate Tennis Rankings. He has an overall singles record of 20-2, including a dual match mark of 17-1, and has won 17 straight matches. Nieto has posted four victories over players ranked in the top 125, including a triumph over 22nd-ranked Robert Searle of Rice. He advanced to the quarterfinals at the South Atlantic Region Championships. In doubles, Nieto and teammate Florian Marquardt (Saulheim, Germany) have been ranked as high as 46th nationally in doubles earlier this season, and own a pair of victories over ranked opponents.

Djordjevic posted an impressive 21-2 record, including 11-0 in dual matches, as Hofstra's number one seed. He has not lost a match since October 26 and is in the midst of a 10-match winning streak. Djordjevic won the Scott Satran Memorial Tournament in September, not dropping a set through his seven victories. Djordjevic has defeated three ranked opponents this season. He also has a 9-5 record in doubles, including an 8-4 mark at the number one seed.

Kostin earns CAA men's Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in the past eight seasons after guiding Virginia Commonwealth to a 21-3 record and a national ranking of 17th. The Rams enter the CAA Tournament having won 12 straight matches and have captured their last 26 matches at home.

The awards were presented Thursday night prior to the quarterfinals of the 2003 CAA Men's Tennis Championship, which resumes Friday morning at VCU's Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va. The semifinal and championship matches will be played at Byrd Park.
