Seven Monarchs Named to CAA's 25th Anniversary Men's Tennis Team

RICHMOND, Va. (December 9, 2009) -The Colonial Athletic Association has announced its men's tennis Silver Anniversary team, which includes 16 former CAA Players of the Year and eight All-Americans.

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports. The teams are selected by a panel of current and former coaches in the conference.

Members of the CAA Silver Anniversary team for men's tennis are:

Daniel Andersson (VCU), Alexandre Cancado (Old Dominion), Henrique Cancado (Old Dominion), Tom Clarke (Richmond), Alex Cojanu (William and Mary), Zoltan Csanadi (Old Dominion), Will Harvie (William and Mary), Jeff Kader (William and Mary), Vosko Kohlmayer (William and Mary), Arnaud Le Cloerec (VCU), Scott Lindsey (William and Mary), Scott Mackesy (William and Mary), Florian Marquardt (VCU), Frank Moser (VCU), Pedro Nieto (VCU), Colin O'Brien (William and Mary), Miguel Rosa (Old Dominion), Jose Sanchez (VCU), Aleksandr Seleznev (Old Dominion), Trevor Spracklin (William and Mary), Harel Srugo (Old Dominion), Martin Stiegwardt (Georgia State), Olivier Tauma (VCU), Izak van der Merwe (Old Dominion) and Richard Wernerhjelm (VCU).

Men's tennis has been a championship sport in the CAA since the league's inception in 1985. VCU has captured a league-high 11 conference championships, including a stretch of nine in a row from 1996-2004. William and Mary (1987, 1990, 2005) and Richmond (1992, 1993, 1995) have each claimed three CAA titles, while James Madison (1989, 1991) and Navy (1985, 1986) have won two. Also taking home CAA championships have been Georgia State (2007), UNC Wilmington (2009) and Old Dominion (1994).

The conference has also established an outstanding reputation nationally, with several teams and numerous individuals ranked among the best in Division I each year. In 2000, VCU reached the finals of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship. In 2007, the conference placed a league-record four teams in the NCAA Championship when Georgia State, Old Dominion, VCU and William and Mary all earned bids.

Daniel Andersson - VCU - 1996-2000 - Stockholm, Sweden
• Two-time ITA All-American (1998, 2000) who was ranked #1 nationally in singles in 2000
• Holds VCU record for career singles wins with a 144-35 record
• Two-time CAA Player of the Year and three-time CAA Tournament MOP

Alexandre Cancado - Old Dominion - 1996-2000 - Belo Horizonte, Brazil
• Earned All-CAA honors in 1998, 1999 and 2000
• Ranked among the top 100 singles players in the nation in 1998 and 1999
• Chosen to the ITA Academic All-America team in 1999 and 2000

Henrique Cancado - Old Dominion - 2003-07 - Belo Horizonte, Brazil
• Ranked 13th in the nation in doubles and 76th in singles in 2007
• Compiled a career record of 93-39 in singles and 71-34 in doubles
• Two-time All-CAA selection who was an ITA Regional finalist in singles

Tom Clarke - Richmond - 1991-95 - Perth Australia
• Selected as the CAA Player of the Year in 1992
• Captured the CAA championship at #1 singles in 1992, 1993 and 1995
• Chosen as the CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Performer in 1993 and 1995

Alex Cojanu - William and Mary - 2004-08 - Hallandale, Fla.
• Competed in the NCAA Doubles (2007, 2008) and Singles Championships (2008)
• Seven-time All-CAA honoree and CAA Rookie of the Year in 2005
• Ranks second in career doubles victories at W&M with a 97-53 mark

Zoltan Csanadi - Old Dominion - 2000-04 - Timisoara, Romania
• Earned All-America honors in 2004 after making the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals
• ODU's career leader in singles victories with a 103-46 record
• Three-time 1st team All-CAA selection in singles and two-time 1st team choice in doubles

Will Harvie - William and Mary - 1984-88 - Belle Haven, Va.
• Honored as CAA Player of the Year in 1986 and 1987
• Captured the top singles and doubles flights at the 1986 and 1987 CAA Championships
• Won 65 singles and 59 doubles matches in his W&M career

Jeff Kader - William and Mary - 2001-05 - Geneva, Ohio
• Participated in the NCAA Singles Championship in 2004 and 2005
• Four-time All-CAA selection in singles and MVP of the 2005 CAA Tournament
• Won 85 singles and 84 doubles matches during his Tribe career

Vosko Kohlmayer - William and Mary - 1991-93 - Bratislavia, Slovakia
• Honored as the CAA Player of the Year in 1993
• Post a career singles record of 34-16, including 24-9 in dual matches
• Won 11 consecutive singles matches during the 1993 season

Arnaud Le Cloerec - VCU - 2003-07 - Plouhinec, France
• Earned ITA All-America honors in singles in 2005 and 2006
• CAA Co-Player of the Year in2005 and 2006 and CAA Rookie of the Year in 2004
• Named to the All-CAA first team in singles and doubles during all four seasons

Scott Lindsey - William and Mary - 1990-94 - Commack, N.Y.
• Selected as the CAA Player of the Year in 1994
• Chosen as the Tribe's team MVP three times
• Ranks sixth in career singles victories at W&M with an 82-52 record

Scott Mackesy - William and Mary - 1987-91 - Wallaceburg, Ontario
• Honored as the CAA Player of the Year in 1990 and 1991
• Ranks second in W&M history in singles victories with a 90-42 career mark
• Posted a 24-6 singles record in 1991, including 18 straight wins to end his career

Florian Marquardt - VCU - 2000-04 - Saulheim, German
• Received ITA All-America honors in doubles in 2001
• Named CAA Player of the Year in 2002 and CAA Rookie of the Year in 2001
• Captured the National Clay Court Doubles Championship in 2000

Frank Moser - VCU - 1998-2001 - Baden-Baden, Germany
• Only VCU player to earn ITA All-America honors in singles (2000) and doubles (2001)
• Selected as the CAA Player of the Year in 2001
• Participated in the NCAA Doubles Championship three times

Pedro Nieto - VCU - 2001-05 - Sevilla, Spain
• Selected as the CAA Player of the Year in 2003
• Five-time All-CAA honoree who was the CAA Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2003
• Advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship in 2004

Colin O'Brien - William and Mary - 2003-07 - Dublin, Ireland
• Earned All-CAA honors three times in singles and once in doubles
• Received a berth in the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championship
• Captured the ITA Mideast Doubles Championship in 2006

Miguel Rosa - Old Dominion - 1992-96 - Londrina, Brazi
• Honored as the CAA Player of the Year in 1995
• Compiled a career record of 72-25 in singles and 48-20 in doubles
• Earned 1st team All-CAA honors in doubles in 1996

Jose Sanchez - VCU - 1997-2000 - Alicante, Spain
• Three-time selection to the All-CAA first team
• Chosen as the CAA Rookie of the Year in 1998
• Ranks sixth in school history with 82 career singles victories

Aleksandr Seleznev - Old Dominion - 2006-09 - Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic

• Named Most Outstanding Performer of the 2007 CAA Championship
• Chosen to the All-CAA first team in singles and doubles in 2006 and 2007
• Received berth to the NCAA Singles Championship in 2007

Olivier Tauma - VCU - 1995-97 - Paris, France
• Received ITA All-America accolades in singles in 1997
• Advanced to the semifinals of the 1997 NCAA Singles Championship
• Named Most Outstanding Performer at the 1996 and 1997 CAA Tournaments

Izak van der Merwe - Old Dominion - 2001-05 - Kempton Park, South Africa
• Three-time NCAA All-American, twice in singles (2004, 2005) and once in doubles (2004)
• CAA Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 and six-time 1st team All-CAA selection
• Reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in doubles (2004) and singles (2005)

Richard Wernerhjelm - VCU - 1994-98 - Stockholm, Sweden
• Honored as an ITA All-American in singles in 1997
• Chosen as the CAA Player of the Year in 1997 and 1998
