Eric Decker Takes Fifth at Southern Scuffle Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- ODU finished with a 20th place effort at the Southern Scuffle, with one placewinner in junior Eric Decker (Wells Bridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford). Decker finished in 5th place at 174 lbs, going 5-2 at the event. ODU will host three opponents during the ODU Quad this Sunday, January 4 starting at 2:00 pm. The doors of the Ted Constant Convocation Center will open at 1:00 pm for fans.
In his first match of the day, Eric Decker, at 174 lbs, got his first look at the CAA's top ranked wrestler at his weight, Alton Lucas (Hofstra). Lucas narrowly edged Decker in the match, 3-2, and Decker was bumped to the consolation bracket.
In the wrestlebacks, Decker won three matches to seal a fifth place finish at the Southern Scuffle. He beat West Virginia's Chance Litton in a sudden victory 6-4 win, then put away North Carolina's Nick Tenpenny by a 3-1 count to advance to the placing bouts. Against #16 Luke Rebertus (Navy), Decker forced an overtime and tiebreaker period, where Rebertus won 4-2 in the consolation semis and then won by medical forfeit over Lucas for the fifth place finish.
Kaylen Baxter (149) lost his two matches on the second day by just three points combined, and he started the day for ODU with a match against #5 Bryce Saddoris (Navy). Baxter hung in against the top-five grappler, but Saddoris won a 5-3 decision to bounce the Monarch into the consolation bracket. In the wrestlebacks, Baxter dropped a 3-2 decision to Liberty's Frankie Gayes to end his run at the Scuffle.
Rookies Joe Budi and David Wilson both lost their matches on Tuesday, as well. Budi faced #6 Dustin Kilgore (Kent State) and Mikal McKee (UNC Greensboro) while Wilson suffered a 6-1 setback to #7 Mitch Monteiro (Cal-Bakersfield) and then fell to Dustin Porter (Gardener-Webb) to end his run at his first Scuffle.
ODU posted 23.5 points in the event, scoring a 20th place finish. ODU also participated in the Midlands Wrestling Championship on Monday and Tuesday. The Monarchs will host the ODU Quad this Sunday, January 4 starting at 2:00 pm. The Monarchs will welcome Purdue, George Mason and UNC Greensboro in dual action at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
