NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University's football program begins its transition to the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision in 2013 and announced today it will take on the University of North Carolina next year on Oct. 12 in Chapel Hill.

"We are very grateful to UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham and the UNC football program for providing ODU with such a wonderful opportunity to compete next fall against the Tar Heels in our first year of transition to FBS," remarks ODU athletic director Dr. Wood Selig. "This game should provide a tremendous game day experience for our student athletes, coaches, and fans. Given the geographical proximity of Chapel Hill to Norfolk, I would expect a very large group of Monarch faithful to accompany our team to Kenan Stadium."

The contract with UNC is for one year, with no additional games planned at this time. Tickets for ODU fans for this game will be made available during the 2013 football reseating campaign, utilizing the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation priority point system for ticket allocation and seating.

The Monarchs are playing their final season as a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) member in the Colonial Athletic Association this year. ODU will become a football member of Conference USA in 2015 and anticipates playing a mixed schedule of FBS and FCS opponents in 2013. ODU announced last month a two-year series with Norfolk State that includes an Oct. 26, 2013 game at NSU and a return contest at ODU in 2015. In addition, the Monarchs will host UNC Charlotte next season on Nov. 16. The 49ers, which are also joining Conference USA, will play their first season of football next year and will make the transition to the FBS level with ODU in 2015.

"We are excited as a program to play North Carolina in 2013," says ODU head coach Bobby Wilder. "As we witnessed in their 48-34 win vs. Virginia Tech this past Saturday, they are a good program that will only get better under first year Head Coach Larry Fedora. Our goal as a program for 2013 is to play the top F.B.S. programs in our region that have available dates on their schedule. This is a great game for our program and 12th Monarchs everywhere!
