WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team opened up the 2006 campaign on a high note with a 14-12 victory over American at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex on a chilly, breezy Saturday afternoon.

The win improved the Lady Monarchs to 15-0 all-time versus the Eagles, as American fell to 0-2 on the season. Old Dominion has also now won three of its last four season openers.

Junior Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.) led all scorers with five goals, including the afternoon's game winner, while sophomore Kelly Kimener (Oakton, Va.) added in three in her return to the turf following last year's injury. Also scoring for the Lady Monarchs were junior Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, Va.) with two and seniors Sarah Lautenbach (West Chester, Pa.) and Tameka Davis (Washington, D.C.) with a tally apiece.

Jacobs, who led the Lady Monarchs in points a season ago, also had four assists in her stat column.

American had seven different goal scorers led by Lauren Askionoff with three, and Gina Ibello, Jackie Lane, and Moriah Linnell with two each.

Both teams traded goals through the first portion of the first half as American seemed to have an answer each time Old Dominion found the back of their net. Kimener had back-to-back to goals within a two minute span to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-2 edge with 13:07 remaining in the first half. However a minute later, American would begin a four goal rally to go ahead 5-4 with 8:41 left in half number one.

Stanwick broke the Lady Monarch scoring drought and pulled Old Dominion to within one, 5-6, with 3:52 on the clock. However, American once again had the answer as Lauren Askionoff capitilized on an ODU turnover in front of the net to give her Eagles the 7-5 advantage at half.

Half number two proved to be a different story for Old Dominion as the Lady Monarchs outscored their opponent 9-5. Within moments of the whistle that opened the second half, the Lady Monarchs tied the game. Lautenbach and Shotwell both got past American netminder Kathleen Finnegan to knot the sore at 7-7 with 27:19 left in the game.

American responded with two straight goals to regain the lead, but their lead was short lived. Askionoff put the Eagles up 9-7 as the clock read 20:42, but less than a minute later Old Dominion's Davis poured in the first of three answered Lady Monarch goals. Kimener put in the last tally in the rally giving ODU a 10-9 advantage with 17:04 remaining.

Over the next six minutes, the Lady Monarchs and Eagles would continue to trade goals. After American tied the game up at 11-11 with 12:07 left, Old Dominion scored three unanswered goals within a minute and a half to put the game out of reach. The scoring barrage started with Jacobs on an unassisted goal. Then she managed to feed the ball twice to Stanwick who registered the game-winner at the 10:26 mark and added in an insurance goal with 9:55 remaining.

American's Linenell scored with 27 seconds left to bring the score to its final 14-12 margin.

Team wise the Lady Monarchs collected 15 groundballs, while Amerian had 13. ODU dominated the draws 19-9 and outshot the Eagles, 36-30. Six different Lady Monarchs scooped up two groundballs, while Jacobs recorded a game-high six draws. For the Eagles, goalkeeper Kathleen Finnegan had three groundballs, while Sarah Milewski won three draws.

In goal, senior Michelle Gannon (Delmar, Md.) played the game's first 19 minutes and last 10 minutes allowing five goals while making five saves. Sara Larson (Sylvian Lake, Mich.) saw over 30 minutes of action making three saves while allowing seven goals.

The Lady Monarchs return to action next Saturday when they host UMBC at Foreman Field in their home opener.
