Monarch Tennis Ranked 66th In First ITA Team Poll

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion University men's tennis team was ranked 66th in the first ITA national team rankings sponsored by FILA released this week. The Monarchs will be the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, California this weekend.
Two Monarchs are also featured in the rankings. The doubles team of junior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and sophomore Eidy Igarashi (Sao Jose do Rio Preto, Brazil) were ranked 33rd in doubles, while Igarashi was ranked 91st in singles.
Together at doubles, the Monarch team of Cancado and Igarashi compiled a 7-3 fall tournament record. They won the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational of Virginia Beach and also reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Mideast regional upsetting then-ninth ranked David North and Marko Rajavac of Georgia Tech along the way. Nationally they participated in the qualifying doubles bracket of the Ralph Lauren All-American Championship, reaching the Round of 32.
Igarashi, the 2005 CAA Rookie of the Year, played to an 8-3 singles record during the fall tournament season. He reached the Round of 16 at the University of Virginia Invitational, upsetting then-#51 Brandon Wai of Yale along the way, was a Round of 64 participant in the qualifying bracket at the Ralph Lauren All-American Championships, and reached the Round of 32 at the ITA Mideast Regional.
After this weekend's National Collegiate Tennis Classic, the Old Dominion men's team will host George Washing and Howard on Friday, January 20th at Centre Court Racket Club in Newport News in their first dual meet of the season. The Monarchs will face eight opponents this spring that have been ranked in the first ITA team poll, including #1 Virginia, #8 Duke, #13 Texas A&M, #15 Wake Forest, #33 Virginia Commonwealth, #45 N.C. State, #49 UPenn, and #65 William & Mary.
The next team rankings will be released on January 31st, while the next set of individual rankings will be released on February 22nd.
