FAIRFAX, Va. - Redshirt sophomore John Nicholson went a perfect 4-0 with a pair of tech falls and a major decision to lead the Old Dominion University wrestling team to a 3-1 record at the 10th annual CAA Duals at the GMU Field House on Saturday.

After opening the duals with a convincing 36-3 win over Boston University, the Monarchs faced their toughest challenge of the day against Hofstra, who they shared a No. 25 ranking with this week. Unable to overcome an early deficit despite a late charge, the Pride came out victorious, 21-12. Getting back on track, ODU eased past Drexel, 22-12, before capping the day with a 33-6 route of host George Mason to improve their overall season record to 10-7 and 3-2 in the CAA.

Leading the way for ODU at 157 pounds was No. 28 Nicholson, who is a riding a nine-match winning streak and has won 10 times in 11 bouts in 2012. Also with strong performances for the Monarchs was No. 13 Te Edwards (174), who went 2-0, while senior Joe Budi (197), redshirt junior Brennan Brumley (149), sophomore No. 31 Tristan Warner (165) and redshirt sophomore Billy Curling (184) each went 3-1 on the day.

ODU won nine of their 10 matches against Boston University (8-2, 0-1) to start things off strong as Brumley, Nicholson and Warner all collected major decision victories and Budi and redshirt freshman Matt Tourdot won via forfeit in the upper weights.

In the marquee match of the day that featured two ranked opponents, Hofstra (6-0, 2-0) jumped out commanding 12-0 lead, winning the first four matches with three of their ranked grapplers. ODU would cut the team lead down to three on two separate occasions after three consecutive wins by Nicholson, Warner and Edwards. Warner's 7-3 win at 165, came over No. 11 P.J. Gillespie in one of the larger upsets of the day. Another Hofstra ranked wrestler won at 184 while Budi won at 197 to close the gap back to three points but a fall at heavyweight would seal the win for the Pride.

In their third match of the day, the Monarchs won four of the first five matches against Drexel (4-7, 0-3) with tech falls from sophomore Scott Festejo at 133 and Nicholson at 157 along with victories by No. 30 Jerome Robinson at 125 and Brumley at 149 to jump on the Dragons early. Drexel would win take three of the final matches to close back the gap, but it wouldn't be enough to catch the Monarchs as six ODU wrestlers took out wins including redshirt junior Brett Miller, in for Edwards at 174, and Curling at 184.

In the final bout of the day for ODU, the Monarchs blasted George Mason, 33-6. The Patriots (5-12, 0-5) won two of the first three matches, but it was all ODU after that as Brumley (149) and Curling (184) picked up major decisions while Nicholson (157) and Budi (197) earned tech falls and Tourdot (285) picked up a fall in the Monarchs' 10th consecutive win over Mason.
