Women's Lax Picks Up First Conference Win Of Season

NORFOLK, VA -- Junior midfielder Erin Lindsey (Audubon, PA) and senior attack Daniel Hensil (Havertown, PA) each tallied three goals to lead the Lady Monarchs to a 8-6 victory over George Mason in their first CAA match-up of the season.
The Lady Monarchs improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Patriots fall to 2-2. Both teams were playing in their conference opener.
George Mason was led by senior attack Jill Toomey and sophomore attack Kristy Manas each with two goals apiece. Toomey also added an assist for three points on the day.
George Mason's Kate Scott struck first with 23:28 on the clock, but Old Dominion would go on to score three unanswered golas for a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) gave the Lady Monarchs the lead at 22:29 in the first and then would assist on the next two goals by Lindsey and Hensil to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-3 edge entering the half. Toomey scored twice midway through the second half, both unassisted tallies, to bring the Patriots within one at the intermission.
Old Dominion outscored George Mason 4-3 in the second half of play. The Patriots would pull within one point of the Lady Monarch lead on several occasions, but the ODU defense would keep the George Mason at bay. Hensil pushed ODU's lead to 5-3 less than a minute into the half, but the Patriot's Susie Craig, off the assist from Toomey, pulled George Mason back within one, 5-4, just moments later. Lindsey's second net of the afternoon put the Lady Monarchs back up by two, 6-4, but George Mason once again countered with a Manas goal to close within one once again, 6-5, with 25 minutes remaining. Hensil's thrid and final goal of the game came at the 19:49 mark, off a Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) assist, in what would prove to be the game winner giving Old Dominion a 7-5 edge. Toomey reached the back of the Lady Monarch net with 18:32 remaining on her second goal of the afternoon, but the Lady Monarchs' would keep the Patriots out of the cage the rest of the way. Lindsey poured in her third and final goal with eight minutes to seal the victory. Shotwell assisted on the goal, her third assist of the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) recorded a career-high 17 saves in net for ODU, while the Patriot's Meg Dentler stopped eight Lady Monarch shots.
Senior Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) and junior Kelly Jefferys (Horseheads, NY) recorded four groundballs for the Lady Monarchs. Smith also added five draw controls. Toomey scooped up three groundballs in the loss for the Patriots. Brandi Evan also managed four caused turnovers and two draws for George Mason.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday, March 16th when they host #10 James Madison at 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field.
