HAMPTON, VA. - Michael Purvis scored 12 of his game high 20 points in the second half to lead the Pirates of Hampton University to a 77-70 victory over Old Dominion Wednesday night at the HU Convocation Center. HU is now 3-0, while the Monarchs fall to 1-3.
The Pirates held a 35-31 lead at halftime as Purvis and Jeff Granger each scored eight points. In the second half, the Pirates held ODU to .37 percent shooting (12-37), while hitting 49 percent (13-27) themselves. Five HU players scored in double figures. David Johnson scored 14, Barry Hairston 13, Devin Green 11 and Jeff Granger had 10.
Four Monarchs scored in double figures led by Senior Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC.) with 18 points. Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC.) added 14 points with nine rebounds, freshman guard Isaiah Hunter (Charlotte, NC.) scored 13 as did sophomore John Waller (Richmond, VA.) . Waller was making his first start of the season.
ODU was without the services of T.J. Waldon (Lakeland, FL.) and Troy Nance (VA. Beach, VA.). Waldon has been bothered by a foot injury which sidelined him all last year and Nance got sick prior to game-time. Waldon is day-to-day, and Nance should be back for Saturday's game with East Carolina.
ODU's game with ECU is at 7 p.m. Saturday night in the Ted Constant Convocation Center and will be televised in the Hampton Roads area on Cox channel
