WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Lady Monarchs played 90 minutes of soccer in extreme heat against American University on Saturday. The exhibition was broken into three 30-minute periods and the Lady Monarchs fell to the Eagles 1-4. Lizzy Brewster (Clifton, VA) scored ODU's only goal off an assist by Lisa McKenzie (Inverness, Scotland) with 12:20 remaining in the third.

In the first period, ODU outshot the Eagles 5-3 and junior Lauren Tupman (Virginia Beach, VA) had two saves in a shutout period.

The Eagles got on the board early in the second period as Erin Koch sent a through ball to Krystn Hodge who took ODU's junior, Colby Owen (Virginia Beach, VA), on with the dribble for the goal. American got one more through by Owen in the 51st minute as Kelsey Brasher found the back of the net for the gamewinner off an assist by Siobhan Gillan.

Hodge would knock home a second and third for a hat trick by the end of the third as she scored both in the 60th and 68th minutes to give American a 4-0 lead.

ODU would answer in the third with an indirect kick at the top of the box. In the 78th minute, McKenzie flicked a beautiful ball over top the wall to find Brewster's foot for the one-time volley.

The Lady Monarchs outshot the Eagles 14-10 in the game, putting six on goal. Tupman would return to the game in the third period and did not allow a goal in 61:07 minutes of play. Brewster had three shots, all on-goal, while Jenni Purdum (Vienna, VA) and McKenzie took two apiece. Freshmen Alyssa Pietrobono (Newark, DE) and Kelsey Williams (Newport News, VA) also had a shot on-goal apiece.

ODU has one more exhibition before the regular season begins. The game is Tuesday, August 28 at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium at 7:00 pm. The Lady Monarchs will host Virginia Wesleyan. The first regular season game of the year is Sunday, September 2 at home against Loyola College (MD). Kick-off is set for 1:00 pm.
