Delaware Upends Women's Soccer In Double OT, 3-2
Oct. 10, 2001
Wilmington, DE-Delaware's Caryn Blood scored the game-winner with 7:57 left in the second overtime period to lift the Blue Hens to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Old Dominion this afternoon. With the loss, ODU drops to 3-6-1 on the season, while Delaware improves to 5-5.
Delaware's Ginna Lewing put the Blue Hens on the board first, when she nailed a header from teammate Ginette Buffone's corner kick. Old Dominion's Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) scored twice after the intermission for a Lady Monarch lead, but Delaware came right back, netting the equalizer just minutes after McGovern's second goal.
The two teams played through one scoreless overtime before Blood finally ended the game, taking a cross from teammate Megan McFadden and putting the ball past ODU goalie Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD). McFadden would finish with two crucial assists-one on the game-tying goal and the eventual game-winner.
Old Dominion held a 21-20 advantage in shots, but had a rough time with Hen goalkeeper Rachel Bersin, who finished with nine saves. Dedmond collected six saves in the loss.
Today's loss is the fourth in a row for Old Dominion, who has now lost four games by one goal.
The Lady Monarchs will be on the road again for their next opponent. Old Dominion will travel to Morgantown, WV for a match-up with #19 West Virginia on Sunday, October 14.
