Complete Race Results

Camden, N.J. – In its first time through a regatta with a heats to semis to finals progression, the ODU women’s rowing team came away with a first place finish in the WF8 and a third place finish in the WV4 at the 2009 Knecht Cup held this weekend.  The WF4 won its Petite Final by open water and posted the third fastest time of the event between the Petite and Grand Final.

In drenching rain with quartering head wind conditions, the F4 began the day for ODU with a race that was tightly contested for the first 1,300 meters.  The Lady Monarchs broke away from the pack with 500 meters to go and crossed the finish line by a comfortable margin of open water.

The V4 was in a four boat race until the 1000-meter mark when Tulsa moved ahead.  At that point the race was between ODU, Philadelphia, and West Virginia University.  West Virginia had been a challenge for the Lady Monarchs in the heat races and semifinals.  In both events, ODU pushed past the Mountaineers in the last 400 meters. However, in the Grand ODU and Philadelphia moved away from WVU after the 1,250 mark, making the race for second and third came down to the wire with both boats crossing the line with less than one second between them.

The Frosh 8 won all three of their races over the weekend by open water to dominate the event rowing at a 32 through the line.

"We are so happy with the results of the entire team today,” said head coach Heather Weisel.  “Everyone pushed themselves and found new speed today.  It was a tremendous opportunity to practice race strategy and experience working our way through this type of regatta."

Next up for ODU are the CAA Championships where they will row a combined lineup of several Frosh 8 and Varsity 4 rowers in the WV8 and the W2V8 in the Inaugural CAA Rowing Championships.
