PRESEASON CAMP UPDATE: Day Two - Practice Begins
Aug. 10, 2009
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion football team took to the practice fields for the first time today as they prepare for their inaugural season of Division I FCS play.
The day began as the Monarchs were tested in the 40-yard dash. The drill was as much about speed as it was endurance with each of the Monarchs running 10 reps with 35 seconds rest in between.
"I've been really pleased with the conditioning overall," remarked head coach Bobby Wilder. "Of the 40 guys who were here consistently this summer, all 40 guys passed their test. They did a phenomenall job with the weight lifting and the endurance. The one promise I made them in the last meeting before going home for break was that every guy who was coming back, would come into camp in shape, and if they weren't, they'd spend extra time conditioning."
Practice was pushed back from its original 3:30 p.m. start team due to the extreme temperatures hitting the area. With steamy weather in the forecast and predicted temperatures soaring to nearly 100 degrees, the first official ODU practice was pushed back into the evening.
The 88 members of camp hit the turf in helmets and shorts for their first official practice as the August sun set and a breeze was felt coming off the Elizabeth River. The Monarchs took to the turf for two hours working on positional skills and practicing special teams.
Wilder and his staff were looking to build upon the momentum of last April's spring game. Feeling as the spring game was the Monarchs' best practice of the 15 spring workouts, Wilder felt that tonight's practice was faster and the exucution was cleaner and more crisp.
"The level of practice was good," sai*d Wilder. "There were times I was looking at different players on offense and defense and I was seeing guys compete. We were having success on both sides of the ball and that's what I want to see."

In order to do that at times you got to throw things at them they are not expecting."
