LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- Former Old Dominion standout Alex Cancado, current senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Monarch head coach Darryl Cummings were all apart of the National Beach Tennis Championships held over Labor Day Weekend.

The Cancado brothers reached the finals, while Cummings and his doubles partner Rush Cole were upset in the quarterfinals by the Italian team after advancing from their division.

Murphy Jensen, 1993 French Open doubles champion and outrageous host of "Open Access" on The Tennis Channel, served as guest emcee for the Men's Pro finals.

Even the wrath of a tropical storm could not put a damper on the final event of Beach Tennis USA's 2006 National Tour. Despite a scheduling change necessitated by the weather conditions, this year's national championship, held on Labor Day (September 4) in Long Beach, NY, was unquestionably the best and most spectacular event in the brief history of American beach tennis.

Chris Henderson & Phil Whitesell of Charleston, South Carolina successfully defended their national championship title and #1 U.S. ranking by winning the Men's Pro division for the second straight year. Nadia Johnston & Fabiana Rezak of Long Island also repeated as champions by again claiming the Women's Pro division crown.

The daylong event included a concert on the beach by local favorites The Mystic plus other attractions. A portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to the Michelle O'Neill Foundation, a not-for-profit organization based in Long Beach, NY that benefits children with cancer.

Here are some scenes from the National Championship. For a full recap of our National Championship, click here.
