NORFOLK, Va. - Junior James Nicholson was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team, the NWCA announced Wednesday.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point-average, and either been an NCAA qualifier or have won 60 percent of his total schedule - and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is to have a 3.0 GPA and have been a NCAA All-American.
"The student-athletes on this All-Academic Team are a great example of the hard work and dedication that the sport of wrestling teaches these young men," said NWCA President Jim Beichner. "Not only are they achieving winning a National Championship, but they are also showing that they are champions in the classroom as well."
Nicholson, a recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Award for wrestling, has a 3.48 GPA in Finance and qualified for his third straight NCAA Tournament in 2010.
Nicholson, who is also minoring in marketing at ODU, is a Dean's List student that was a member of the NWCA All-Academic team in 2009 and is a three-time recipient of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award.
On the mat, Nicholson compiled a sparkling 32-3 overall record this season and was the CAA Champion at 125-pounds for the third year in a row. The 2007-08 All American was ranked seventh nationally and was the #7 seed at the 2010 NCAA Championship, where he posted a 2-2 record.
The 2009-10 All-Academic individual team includes 61 NCAA qualifiers, 23 NCAA All-Americans, seven NCAA finalists and the five NCAA champions. In all, 74 individuals representing 45 schools are being honored on this year's All-Academic Team.
