Lady Monarchs Edged By North Carolina, 2-1, In Overtime

NORFOLK, VA (Oct. 30) - The defending national champion Old Dominion field hockey team was upended by #6 North Carolina, 2-1, in overtime Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. The #7 Lady Monarchs fall to 13-6 overall (5-0 CAA) while the Tar Heels improve to 14-5 overall (2-2 ACC).

Old Dominion opened the scoring with a Marina DiGiacomo (Mendoza, Argentina) goal at the 32:11 mark in the first half. Sophomore Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) assisted on the play.

North Carolina tied the game on a Jana Toepel (Perkiomenville, Pa.) goal at the 20:43 mark of the first half. The game remained notched at one through regulation. Toepel connected for the game winner at the 7:15 mark of the first overtime period.

Tomorrow, Old Dominion will close out the regular season with the second game of the AstroTurf Surfaces Scholarship Weekend. A 1 pm tipoff with Princeton marks the last home game for seniors Ashleigh Miller (West Vancouver, Canada) and Kim Miller (Virginia Beach, Va.).
