FAIRFAX, Va. -- The #22 Monarchs improved to 12-3 overall, 4-1 in the CAA on the season and hung in with the #12 Hofstra Pride (10-6/5-0), losing just 22-19 with each team taking five bouts apiece. Old Dominion dropped Binghamton, 23-15, and Boston University, 24-18, before facing the Pride for just their third loss of the season. All three losses have come at the hands of teams in the national top twenty.

"Today we had a good match against Hofstra. It came down to bonus points because we split 5 to 5. We came up short on that end. We were pretty close to knocking them off, but not quite," said head coach Steve Martin. "We were very close to knocking off the #12 team in the country and #1 team in the conference, so that's definitely a positive."

ODU opened the day with their second win ever over Binghamton, dropping the Bearcats by a score of 23-15. Kaylen Baxter's win streak was snapped by nationally ranked Kyle Fried at 149 lbs. The trio of brothers, Nate Patterson (157), Michael Patterson (Hwt) and #19 Josh Patterson (17) earned the other three victories for Binghamton.

RS freshman James Nicholson and sophomore Jesse Strawn both won the first of three wins on the day apiece. ODU got two majors and a technical fall in six wins against Binghamton.

Against Boston University, ODU jumped in front 12-0 with a forfeit at 125 and a pin from Hutter at 133 lbs. The match was tied at 15 after the 174 lb bout, when Blake Fusilier earned a first period pin of Nick Pullano. Strawn and junior David Mendoza stepped up for ODU though, with a technical fall and a major decision respectively, to give ODU an insurmountable lead, 24-15.

In the much anticipated match against Hofstra, the Monarchs had reversed fortune after winning the Boston dual with bonus points in hand. It was the Pride that earned more bonus point victories to come away with the three-point win.

The Monarchs jumped to a quick lead as Nicholson defeated #10 Dave Tomasette for the second time this season. With the win he improves to 24-9 on the season as a redshirt freshman.

The Monarchs would suffer back to back losses to a pair of #6 ranked wrestlers in the nation, as Lou Ruggirello pinned Hutter and Charles Griffin earned a 13-4 major over Ryan Williams. Baxter would cut the lead to three with a pin of Mitch Smith, but two more Pride wrestlers ranked in the Top Ten would help put it all but out of reach after the 197 lb bout.

Fifth ranked Alton Lucas dropped Pullano by major decision in the 174 lb class. Strawn stepped in and grabbed a huge major decision at the 184 lb class, cutting the lead to 18-16, but #8 in the country at 197 lbs, Joe Rovelli, disposed of David Mendoza in an 8-0 major.

True freshman Andy Totusek was charged with the task of earning a pin to tie the Pride, but won by decision in a tiebreaker for the final score of 22-19.

"We've got four events left. We've got to finish strong at the CAA Tournament," said Martin. "We want our kids to understand they can compete with the best and beat them. Five matches in one weekend is a lot, especially back-to-back. It'll be nice to be back to a dual meet setting for a couple of weeks."

ODU returns to the mat on Sunday, January 27 as they host Bucknell at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. The dual will be a Spirit Match as all ODU students are admitted free with a student ID. Admission for adults is $7 and $5 for faculty/staff, seniors, children and military.
