Rookie James Nicholson Honored By CAA For the Fourth Time This Season

NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion rookie sensation James Nicholson was named Co-Rookie of the Week by the CAA this week for his fourth honor this season. The newcomer dropped Justin Staylor of Virginia Tech in an 11-2 major decision in his only bout of the week to earn a share of the weekly honor with Binghamton's Tyler Mamberg. The Monarch grappler is ranked as high as #10 in the nation and rounded out the regular season with a 29-7 record.
Nicholson, ranked by all four major national polls, grabbed his 7th major decision with the win and 13th bonus point victory. It was his 20th victory in his last 22 bouts with his only two losses coming to nationally ranked opponents. He has 29 victories as a rookie, the second highest total in the league for a newcomer and his seven major decision are the highest for a newcomer in the CAA. He also is tied for the league lead in technical falls.
The Monarchs finished the 2007 regular season with the second highest total of wins in program history, 17, and the best record in the last 25 years at 17-3. The only three losses came to nationally ranked opponents. The team is now preparing for the CAA Tournament on March 7-8 at Hofstra University.
