NORFOLK, Va. - Eight of the nation's elite programs are set to participate in this year's field at the annual Aaron Szambecki Team Race on the Elizabeth River on March 24-25. All eight teams are ranked in the top-15 of this week's Sailing World National Collegiate Rankings presented by Sperry Top-Sider.
This years field for the Aaron Szambecki Team Race features No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 Roger Williams, No. 6 College of Charleston, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 St. Mary's College (Md.), No. 10 Hobart and William Smith, No. 12 Old Dominion and No. 14 Navy.
"This event has a reputation of always being a very competitive and well-sailed event by all the teams involved," said ODU Head Coach Mitch Brindley. "Our team is looking forward to competing against some of the nation's best teams here at home. There are four other teams from our conference here competing this weekend and that should help us with our conference championship event next month. It really gives us a chance to see where we have progressed in the spring and what we still need to work on in the next month as we head into the championship part of the season."
After a strong showing last weekend at the Truxtun Umsted in Annapolis, Md., ODU had moved up four spots to its highest ranking of the spring to No. 12 nationally in this week's third edition of the spring rankings by Sailing World.
Action is tentatively schedule to get underway on the Elizabeth River at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday with adjustments to come depending on weather conditions.
Live results of each round can be found at ODUSports.com as well as pictures and video recapping the event.
