HAMPTON, Va. – The No. 25 Old Dominion University wrestling team placed eighth in the 33rd annual Virginia Duals.

In day two of the tournament, ODU beat Bucknell (20-16) but lost to Kent State (27-6) and North Dakota State (27-15) in the seventh place match.

No. 25 Old Dominion vs. Bucknell

ODU’s first wrestle-back match after losing to Edinboro (21-12) on Friday afternoon was against Bucknell. After losing to UVA in the first-round, Bucknell defeated Buffalo yesterday to advance to this second-round showdown with the Monarchs.

Wrestling started out at 125-pounds with a match consisting of No. 10 Jerome Robinson and Bucknell’s Austin Miller. After three periods, the two wrestlers were nodded up at 1-1. The first overtime came and went with no scoring; however, in the second overtime (first ride-out session) Miller pinned Robinson to give Bucknell six team points.

No. 19 Scott Festejo got behind 5-0 early in the math to Paul Petrov. Festejo was able to put two escapes together to cut the lead to 5-2, but Petrov responded with a couple more takedowns and an 11-3 major decision over Festejo. Bucknell got out to a commanding 10-0 lead after only two matches.

Justin LaValle got the nod as Old Dominion’s 141-pounder, as he took on Bucknell’s Derrik Russell. LaValle kicked off the scoring with a takedown before the end of the first period. Russell and LaValle exchanged an escape, before LaValle would get a near-fall and cruised to a 9-1 major decision over Russell.

Next up was No. 31 Alexander Richardson against Adam Healey in a battle of 149-pounders. Richardson scored first with a takedown that Healey would escape out of. Richardson started the third period with an escape, which was followed by a Healey takedown to narrow the deficit to one point. Richardson accumulated a point for riding time and earned three team points for ODU in his 5-3 decision over Healey.

In the 157-pound match, ODU’s No. 17 John Nicholson faced Vincent Favia. With 30 seconds remaining in the first period, Nicholson scored first with a two-point takedown. Nicholson got another takedown in the second period and went onto defeat Favia 5-2. Nicholson’s win allowed ODU to climb all the way back to tie the dual at 10-10.

Points were hard to come by in the 165-pound match between Brett Miller and Brenan McAllister. After two scoreless periods of wrestling, Miller started the third period on-top. McAllister was able to escape and hold onto a 1-0 decision over Miller.

Billy Curling jumped off to an early lead against Ray Schlitt and never looked back. Curling took a 5-0 advantage into the third period, where Curling would start on the bottom and escape and then get a takedown. The former Great Bridge High School standout would end up getting four team points for ODU on his way to a 10-2 major decision. Curling’s win gave ODU their first lead over Bucknell in the match.

The 184-pound bout between Austin Coburn and Robert Marchese would go to the second period with a score of 0-0. Coburn would start the second period with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Marchese would later escape to cut the lead to 3-1, but Coburn was able to hold onto a 3-1 victory over Marchese. ODU now led Bucknell 17-13.

Jacob Henderson’s match with Tyler Lyster went into the third period with no score. Lyster started out the third period with an escape, before Henderson took a 2-1 lead off of a takedown. Lyster would escape once more to tie the match at 2-2, but Henderson’s riding-time lifted him to a 3-2 win. Henderson’s win put the match out of reach for Bucknell, as ODU took a 20-13 lead.

In the dual’s final match, heavyweight No. 33 Matt Tourdot battled Joe Stolfi. After two periods, the score was level at 2-2. Stolfi would start the third period with a takedown, in which Tourdot followed up with another takedown of his own. Stolfi would get his third takedown of the match with 45 seconds left in the third period. Tourdot would get a point for riding time but still lost 6-5. ODU held onto to defeat Bucknell 20-16.

Since Kent State defeated Arizona State 26-12, Old Dominion will square-off with Kent State at 4 p.m. today. The winner of the ODU/Kent State dual will advance to the fifth place match at 6 p.m. and take on the winner of Boise State and North Dakota State.
